Analogue Recording

Most top producers swear by the warmth and fullness of old style magnetic tape recording, whilst software manufacturers have spent thousands of dollars trying to imitate its qualities.

Premier Studios is proud to be one of the few remaining studios in the country able to offer a complete analogue recording service. We do charge a small extra hourly rate for the use of the analogue recorder and tape, as it is very expensive to maintain, (the reason most Studios only provide computer recording!) but in reality this could be a small price to pay.

The reason being that you could record onto tape, but then easily transfer this to the computer for mixing, editing or more overdubs. It could even be used as a final “touch of warmth” by transferring your digital recording to tape before going onto CD.

Again, this would only take an hour or so, so would be an inexpensive way of getting a more authentic old school sound, with that elusive “tape saturation”.

The fact is that, tape does sound different and plug ins will never simulate the real thing exactly the same. Its like trying to get a loud Marshall JCM2000 with a 4 x 12 cab sound, out of a computer, you can’t do it.

Computers use a sample rate, i.e. they “record” say 44100 times a second (in the case of CD). Analogue recordings sampling rate is infinity! This is the reason people give for it “moulding” the sound or “warming it up”.

Ordinarily this would fall well outside of the budget of most projects, but we are pleased to be able to offer this unique service at a very reasonable cost. Whether you are interested in capturing that classic analogue fullness by recording your whole project to tape, or just want to ‘warm up’ a digital recording during mastering, contact us for details of our analogue recording rates.
